Tips For New Comers

1. Moving to Australia
   • Before Packing and leaving for South Australia, it is necessary to check on the list of items prohibited to be entered to South Australia thorough Australian quarantine ( www.aqis.gov.au)  certain goods will not get permission to be imported to the country by the customs officers and even if you fail to declare you may even face paying fine
   
   
   • Before selling your household in Iran and moving to Australia with the assumption of purchasing every thing in Australia brand new, bare in mind :
     • Australia is relatively expensive country, to have an idea you can check some prices through below sites
     • Renting furnished houses in South Australia is not very common
     • Importing house holds for residents is  duty free
     • Check with shipping companies in Iran on possibility and cost of shipment of house hold as a container load

3. Health care
   • Health care is very expensive in Australia, therefore upon Arrival. Make sure that you have taken necessary actions for health insurance:
     • PR holders, to contact Medicare to get their Medicare card

     • Medicare does not cover Ambulance services, it is highly recommended to get insurance for Ambulance services through a private health insurance
     • Migrants with Temporary residency and students are advised to get a private health policy insurance as soon as arrival ( to cover Ambulance services )
4. Bank Account
   • It is important to open a bank account as soon as arrival and deposit your cash, in order to do so :
     • Any Australian bank would do
     • Most banks require your tax file No prior to opening bank account, register for tax file No at www.ato.gov.au
     • Since most payments are done electronically and through plastic cards, it is advisable to ask the bank for a debit card when opening a bank account as you may not be eligible for credit card as a new comer
5. Driving
   • Driving Licence
     As per Australian regulations Permanent residents can drive with their up to 3 month with their Iranian driving Licence and Temporary residents can drive for duration of their visa. As such it is recommended to have legalized translation of your licence along with original driving licence with you and then proceed to apply for Australian driving licence www.transport.sa.gov.au
   • Buying a car
     For new comers, it is recommended to purchase cars from approved car dealers as they will provide few month guarantee.
     - Make sure to have your car insured prior to driving off
     - RAA membership is also advisable www.raa.net
6. English School
   • Adults
     One of the main English schools in Adelaide is TAFE with several centres. There are other English schools in Adelaide www.tafesa.com.au
   • Children
     Gilles St Primary School located in central City is a good option for children with difficulties in English and can be used for children to attended school in first few months of arrival to Australia until improve English www.gillesstps.sa.edu.au
7. Finding Job
   • This is a rather long procedure and applicants should not be discouraged soon and also in applying we suggest following points:
     • Preparing a suitable resume and as per requirements in Australia is essential enabling you to present yourself and abilities in proper manner. Most migrants are entitled to a free of charge sessions at TAFE for witting Resume and applying for jobs. These session are highly recommended.
     • While previous experiences and education is valued, however, employers in SA are focused on territorial educations, as such attending short & mid term courses relevant to your education and experience can help you to find suitable job.
     • Do not be surprised if you were asked for local experience and even to work on volunteer basis for some time.
     • Saturday newspaper “ ADVERTISER “ is a valuable source to see advertisements for job vacancies.

8. Insurance
   • Having insurance policy against probable risks such as car Insurance, theft insurance, fire insurance, etc is highly recommended

   • The Persian cultural association of South Australia, is a non political- non religious organization for all Iranians in South Australia with variety of programs to assist and support new comers as well as to promote Persian culture.
